| Working Principle |
It is particularly used to distinguish the nucleus and cytoplasm morphology of leukocytes, erythrocytes, platelets and parasites. One of its main uses is the staining of blood smears to look for Plasmodium spp in suspected malaria.
Giemsa stain is a classic blood film stain for peripheral blood smears and bone marrow samples. It stains erythrocytes pink, platelets pale pink, lymphocyte cytoplasm sky blue, monocyte cytoplasm pale blue and leukocyte nuclear chromatin magenta. |

Highly flammable liquid and vapour. Toxic by ingestion, skin contact or inhalation. Causes skin irritation. Causes allergic skin reactions. Suspected of causing genetic damage. May cause cancer. Causes damage to organs. |
| Application
|
-Samples must be analysed within 24 hours of collection.
-Fixation: Samples of body fluids should be fixed by air-drying, and tissue sections should be fixed, especially with formalin fixatives.
-Staining Method: Covering or dipping. Dipping method is generally preferred. |
