2123-Formalin Acet Alcohol (FAA) Fixative
Title
Description
REF No
2123
Purpose
It is a multi-component fixative widely used especially for botanical histology, plant anatomy, and general morphological studies.
Ingredients
Ethanol, Acetic Acid, Formaldehyde
Working Principle
It helps preserve cell wall structures, overall tissue organization, and cellular details in plant tissues. It can also be used for morphological examination in some soft tissues. It is preferred in educational and research laboratories because it preserves the clarity of vacuole structures and cellular boundaries in plant tissues. FAA fixative generally consists of a combination of formaldehyde, ethanol, and acetic acid. Formaldehyde stabilizes the cellular and tissue structure by forming cross-links between proteins. Ethanol provides rapid penetration by coagulating proteins and stops enzymatic degradation. Acetic acid contributes to the preservation of nuclear structures and enhances chromatin details. Thanks to this triple effect, FAA preserves both cytoplasmic and nuclear components in a balanced manner, ensuring the maintenance of morphological integrity, particularly in plant tissues.
Warnings, Precautions, Recommendations
Danger. May cause severe skin burns and eye damage. May cause respiratory tract irritation. The product contains flammable alcohol components and toxic formaldehyde; it may be harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin, and prolonged exposure may carry a risk of causing cancer. Avoid breathing the product's vapors or mist. Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames, and hot surfaces. The work area should be well ventilated, preferably using a chemical fume hood. Chemical-resistant protective gloves, appropriate protective clothing, eye protection, and face protection equipment should be used during handling. If contaminated clothing comes into contact with skin or hair, it should be removed immediately and the affected area washed thoroughly with water. If inhaled, the person should be moved to fresh air and kept in a position that allows easy breathing; if symptoms persist, seek medical attention. In case of eye contact, immediately rinse eyes thoroughly with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes; if contact lenses are present and can be easily removed, do so and continue rinsing; if irritation persists, seek medical attention. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting and seek medical attention immediately. In all cases of exposure or suspected exposure, seek medical advice and show the product label or Safety Data Sheet to the healthcare professional. Due to its flammable content, containers should be kept tightly closed and precautions should be taken against static electricity.
