| Purpose |
Carnoy's fixative is a mixture of chemical solutions used for fixation of biological tissue samples. Fixatives preserve the structure of tissues and cells, allowing them to be examined under a microscope. Carnoy's fixative is particularly preferred for its rapid penetration and good morphological preservation. |

Acetic acid, chloroform, ethanol 96% |
| Working Principle |
Ethyl alcohol rapidly removes water from the cell, coagulating the protein and preserving cellular components.
Dehydration helps to stabilize intracellular components intact.
Dissolution of Lipids:
Chloroform dissolves lipids in the cell membrane, making it permeable and allowing better penetration of dyes. It also prevents tissue hardening.
Nucleic Acid and Chromatin Fixation:
Acetic acid protects nucleic acids and chromatin well, so that chromosomes can be seen clearly. |
| Warnings, Precautions, Recommendations |
Hazard Highly flammable liquid and vapor. Harmful if swallowed. Causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Harmful if inhaled. May cause drowsiness or dizziness. Suspected of causing cancer. Suspected of causing damage to the unborn child or reproductive harm. Causes damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure. Keep away from heat/sparks/flame/hot surfaces.
Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection. IN CONTACT WITH SKIN (or hair): Immediately remove all contaminated clothing. Dry skin with water/shower. IN CASE OF CONTACT WITH EYES: Rinse carefully with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if fitted and easy to do so. Continue rinsing. Remove the affected person to fresh air and keep in a comfortable position so that he/she can breathe easily. In case of exposure or interaction IF: Get medical advice/attention. Keep under lock and key. |
